It has always been my experience that gamers have a higher level of social consciousness then the average man on the street. For those non-American readers, I appreciate all the kind thoughts and words that you have shared. For my American readers may I be so bold as to offer a few suggestions?
Don't Panic - This is the most important thing. The goal of terrorism is to strike panic into the target populace. If you panic, you grant the terrorist a victory.
Give Blood - Call your local blood center and see if there are openings today. If not, call back tomorrow and every day until you get in. While you have them on the phone, ask them what they need most (whole blood, plasma, or platelets). Donating anything other than whole blood will take a bit longer, but if it's what's needed then why not?
Give Money - The American Red Cross needs money to transport the blood products and other relief supplies to the affected areas. You can do this on the web through Amazon.com.
Don't Spread Rumors - In the initial hours following the incident, there were more rumors than facts rolling through my workplace. Avoid this, as rumors only lead to panic.
Work - This is another victory strategy. If you let the events interrupt your participation to the economy, then you are handing the terrorists that what they seek.
Report Price-Gouging - There are reports price-gouging throughout the Midwest, especially at gas stations. If you happen to see this first hand, make a note of the offending retailer and call your state's Attorney General's office.
Pray - I realize that a lot of people don't have any kind of religion, but many people do. If you're one of those that do, pray to your god, goddess, or whatever it is you believe in.
